《朱新昌画山海经》 是中国先秦古籍，集地理志、博物志、民族志、民俗志于一身，是古代中国人想象力的集中体现，深刻并鲜活地反映了上古时代的各种神话。编者的构想，是既追求普及性，又保留全书的经典性。不是零敲碎打地演绎若干篇章，而是以可靠的上海古籍出版社的底本为基础，按照古人拟定的框架，以“南山经”“西山经”等十八章排列，并新绘一百幅画作。仅从绘图的气派看，当超出过去的诸多文本。绘图作者朱新昌先生，长期从事神话传说方面的美术创作，为同行所敬服。
Volume One The Classic of the Southern Mountains
There is a mountain called Mount Niu’yang。 The Guai’shui River flows out of this
mountain and runs swiftly to the east before it finally empties itself into the Xianyi River。
In the river there are many big turtles called xuangui， which look like turtles and have a
bird’s headand a snake’s tail。 They make a sound like a piece of wood being chopped。 Whoever wears it in his belt， he will not go deaf and it can curehim of his calluses。
Volume Three The Classic of the Northern Mountains
There is a mountain called Mount Qiaoming。 The Qiaoshui River flows out of this mountain and runs to the west before it finally empties itself into the Yellow River。 In the river there is heluo， a kind of fish， which has one head and ten bodies。 It makes a sound like a barking dog。 Whoever eats it， he will be cured of ulcers。
Volume Three The Classic of the Northern Mountains
There is a mountain called Mount Yufa。 The Huaize River flows out of this mountain and runs to the northeast before it finally empties itself into the Taize Marsh。 In the river there are lots of zao fish which looks like a carp and has a pair of claws like those of a chicken。 Whoever eats it， he will not suffer from warts。
Volume Four The Classic of the Eastern Mountains
There is a mountain called Mount Zitong。 The Zitong River flows out of this mountain
and runs to the west before it empties itself into the Yuru Lake。 In the river there are lots of huayu， a kind of fish with wings like those of a bird。 When it swims in or out of the water， it shines brightly。 It makes a sound like a mandarin duck。 Wherever it appears， there will be a severe drought over all under the sky。
Volume Six The Classic of Areas Overseas： The South
The kingdom of Guanxiong lies to its east。 Its people all have seethrough holes on their chests。 Some people say that it is located east of the kingdom of Zhiguo。
Volume Twelve The Classic of Areas Within the Seas： The North
Wearing jewelry on her head， Queen Mother of the West leans against a long narrow table。 To her south there are three big green birds whose job is to fetch food for her。 Queen Mother of the West lives north of Mount Kunlun。
